“Fifty Shades of Sodom” sweeps across America.

This was the weekend, which was dubbed one of the “naughtiest weekends of the year” according to CNBC. “Fifty Shades of Grey” debuted in theaters all across the nation. Women from all backgrounds of life flooded the theaters to the tune of $81.7 MILLION dollars in ticket sales. Let me repeat that. Americans  gave a whopping Eighty One MILLION dollars to watch an erotic two-hour movie saturated in sex, bondage, rape and abuse.

Yes abuse. They applauded like giddy school girls for a woman who fell in love with rape, masochism and abuse. Also, startlingly this weekend was not only record-breaking at the box office, it was record-breaking in sex shops who quickly sold out of whips and chains. (you know, the things that are supposed to make our marriage beds better)  IN WHAT ALIEN WORLD DOES THAT HAPPEN? They brought this trash home from the theater to their own marriage beds and relationships.

Friends, when I see these mind blowing numbers, I am suddenly faced with the realization that we are not in Kansas anymore. We need a reality check. I think the American family has officially changed their address and moved from what was once a beacon of light, to a place filled with sludge and smut. Sodom and Gomorrah have become a reality and potentially a permanent new address for us. These numbers don’t lie.

Sex sells…,

CBS news reported “Fifty Shades of Grey” has also become the second-highest February debut ever, behind “Passion of the Christ’s” $83.9 million opening in 2004.” (read article here) According to Variety, Fifty Shades of Grey’s” opening weekend audience was 68% female, 52% Caucasian, 22% Hispanic and 15% African-American. …and we bought it.

I’ve always thought there was a “faux” war on women… After this weekend, I actually do think there is a war on women; a war which was applauded and praised to the tune of nearly ninety million dollars in one weekend. Where were the outraged feminists? Even more importantly, where are the Godly women who are standing up as a shield to the next generation of girls?

My facebook feed and blog was flooded with women who were chiding  and mocking those of us calling this movie for what it was…Pornography. I saw moms taking their daughters to see this movie in the guise of “coolness” and “friendship,” yet the next morning had their families lined up in the pew next to them at their church. Christians balking at the idea that Godly women would have the nerve  stand up to say, This movie should NOT be seen.

I understand these days, it’s the new fad to say… “We need to stand up and talk about what we are FOR instead of what we are against.”  I get it. Sometimes I agree with it. However, when it comes to allowing the next generation to run down the path of destruction, and take up residence in “Sodom and Gomorrah,” I am going to call it what it is.

Trash and SIN. (and I believe as Christians, we should LOUDLY stand AGAINST it.)

I’m left speechless with a thousand questions for God on how we got here. Did we accidentally take the wrong turn on this map called life, or was it a deliberate trip with the idea that it would just be a vacation? What would cause women to go see a movie that promoted violence, deep sadistic masochism, and abuse?  How have we sunk so low that we as WOMEN, daughters of the King of Kings would give our minds over to the dark wicked cesspool of slime? The only thing that comes to my mind are the words given in Romans 1.

26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.

28 Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31 they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy.32 Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

What does that mean for America?  What happens to us if in fact, he has given us up to a depraved mind?  I think we are there. We can see the results sweeping the nation. Marriages falling apart, our teenagers running from an Almighty God, temptations that seem to nearly break us in two, the silent pulpit. We see it happening right before our eyes.

Is there hope?

Let me ask you a question. What happens in a dark room when one candle is lit?  Come on, you can talk out loud.  What happens to darkness when a tiny light is sparked?  Light pierces the darkness and exposes it for what it is. Light is contagious. Light feeds off other lights and will shove the darkness right out of a room.

However. Light HAS to expose the darkness, or it’s for naught.

Women of courage where are you?  Women who will unashamedly expose the darkness and be the light?  Last week, I shared my own story of bondage. You can read it here: Not just a Man’s battle. After I shared my story I had two things happen. Women who had been living in the same bondage for years began emailing me. Moms and teenage girls who had been trapped in the bondage of pornography sent me emails crying for help, and thanking me for challenging them not to hide any longer.

I also had another scenario.  I had Christian women email me VERY angry that I had exposed this. Women who said I had no business challenging this movie because if it helped spice up a marriage, who was I to say it was wrong.  Ninety percent of these women disclosed they were Christians. I received a note from a pastor’s wife who said, it was not our job to judge, but to love. She stated if Christians learned not to judge, but to love, we would win souls to Christ. She also let me know she was going to see the movie this weekend. (I wonder if she won any to Christ sitting in the theater.)

How did we get this far?  I think we were given the answer just a few verses up in Romans 1:18 (before he gave them over to a reprobate mind). It says

The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness,

oz8Gn4ttOur job as Christian women IS to love. But what is the definition of love? If we were driving along the road and noticed a “bridge out” sign in front of a van barreling down the road with their family, I think we would do everything in our power to stop the van before it plummeted over the cliff into the icy water below. We would do what it took to save them. Even if it was hard.

We must love enough to rescue our sisters and daughters from the trap of sin. But first we have to call it what it is… Sin.. We CANNOT suppress the truth. This message is for my sisters in Christ. It’s time we wake up.

No where in scripture can I find sadomasochism.  No where in scripture do I find where men are to beat their wives in the name of love? If I’ve missed it please tell me.  What I do find, are VERY clear instructions on how we are to love each other. I find scripture that tells us how to do marriage right. I see warnings and commands to raise the standard for marriage.

Did you know ladies, if you look at a man with lust, you yourself have committed adultery? Yes, that includes books and “to the edge” shows. Our standard is set HIGH.  How tall are your fences?  Are you playing with fire? Are you letting your daughters play with fire.  Are you getting close to the edge of the bridge?

We have a complex these days, of wanting to be liked and loved. It’s time we love our sisters enough to not care if we are liked or loved, and speak the truth that is absent from our lives these days.

Friends, have we already taken up residence in Sodom?  Maybe you have changed your address to Gomorrah.  It’s not too late to cancel that lease and high tail it out of there. Don’t look back.
