We hear repeatedly from the Republican establishment that the fight to defund Planned Parenthood has no path to victory. Any attempt to strip funding will be stonewalled by Senate Democrats, who will shut down the government and blame Republicans. Better not to fight, we are told, for consequences in 2016 will be grave.
Such talk misunderstands political will and the American voter, and can be only a self-fulfilling prophecy.
It presumes that Democrats want to be forced into the situation of defending Planned Parenthood’s atrocities to the American public. It presumes that Democrats will not cave when the American public demands to know why they endorse trafficking in human body parts.
In reality, Democrats only draw their political will from Republican weakness. They expect establishment Republicans to cave quickly on their principles, before the American people’s attention can be turned toward Planned Parenthood’s atrocities. Their path to victory is not a strong political hand, but bluffing and hoping that Republicans fold.
I urge Congressmen Marlin Stutzman, Jackie Walorski, Todd Rokita, Luke Messer, Larry Bucshon, Todd Young and Susan Brooks to sign the Mulvaney letter, and pledge to vote against any continuing resolution that funds Planned Parenthood.
