Oregon Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian finalized a preliminary ruling today ordering Aaron and Melissa Klein, the bakers who refused to make a cake for a same-sex wedding, to pay $135,000 in emotional damages to the couple they denied service.“This case is not about a wedding cake or a marriage,” Avakian wrote. “It is about a business’s refusal to serve someone because of their sexual orientation. Under Oregon law, that is illegal.”In the ruling, Avakian placed an effective gag order on the Kleins, ordering them to “cease and desist” from speaking publicly about not wanting to bake cakes for same-sex weddings based on their Christian beliefs.“This effectively strips us of all our First Amendment rights,” the Kleins, owners of Sweet Cakes by Melissa, which has since closed, wrote on their Facebook page. “According to the state of Oregon we neither have freedom of religion or freedom of speech.”
Do we still live in America? Someone please tell me because I can’t honestly tell anymore. Not only have Aaron and Melissa Klein been slapped with a $135,000 fine for refusing to participate in a gay wedding, but also they have been officially gagged. They have been silenced. The first amendment no longer applies in our country.
The Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor and Industries hereby orders [Aaron and Melissa Klein] to cease and desist from publishing, circulating, issuing or displaying, or causing to be published … any communication to the effect that any of the accommodations … will be refused, withheld from or denied to, or that any discrimination be made against, any person on account of their sexual orientation.
It’s time for us to stand up and speak out. This has to stop, and it has to stop NOW. Our founders came to this nation because of the oppressive tyrannical government of England. They came seeking religious freedom. Today, we are willingly trading freedom for the chains of tyranny.
Bondage has become the new politically correct fad to wear on our sleeve.
Aaron and Melissa Klein find themselves in this lawsuit because of Oregon’s sexual orientation, gender identity laws (SOGI) that give special protection to people based on who they sleep with. They have been forced to make a choice. Obey God or obey man.
This is happening all over the country. Indiana has been hit with this SOGI wave as a result of the weak legislature this past year. Freedom Indiana and gay activists have decided to go from county to county, city to city to pass these SOGI laws. I outlined the dangers of SOGI in my two blogs: Indiana, Introducing SOGI… the RFRA Revenge, and Mommy, there is a Man in my Bathroom. The latest hit came to Goshen Indiana. It was successfully defeated this week when the mayor decided to take it off the table because he didn’t have enough votes to pass it.
The city of Elkhart is the next target for a SOGI push. The Elkhart sexual orientation, gender identity ordinance was introduced on first reading and sent to committee to be brought up sometime in the next two months. It will be critical that Elkhart residents have their finger on the pulse and show up to stop it. The Indiana legislature will be the next target of those who despise the first amendment and religious freedom. They will try to pass a statewide SOGI in January. Be aware… and be ready.
These laws greatly endanger our freedom of religion, our public safety, and our freedom of speech.
Wake up and grab the unwavering spirit of the Kleins who will not compromise their faith. In response to the ruling Aaron Klein said, “Unfortunately, he’s doing this with the wrong Christian, because I fight back.” Klein also delivered a message to Americans and business leaders about why he believes that his case is monumentally important.“For years, we’ve heard same-sex marriage will not affect anybody,” he said. “I’m here firsthand to tell everyone in America that it has already impacted people. Christians, get ready to take a stand. Get ready for civil disobedience.”
It’s here…So what can you do right now.
- We need to stay alert to all local ordinances. This IS coming to your town, so it’s just a matter of when and how. Keep an eye on your city council and county council agendas. Know what they are discussing. Know what is on the calendar. The Indiana Religious Freedom Alliance will be watching, but we need folks on the ground to be the watchdogs. When it comes to your town, organize. The research has already been done on the dangers of SOGI laws. Email us for the documents.
- Support people like Aaron and Melissa Klein who are standing against the tyranny. You can donate funds to help them with their family needs. Give generously by clicking this link
- Gather your churches, pastors, and friends.. get ready. You are not alone. It’s happening before our eyes… churches ARE uniting! They’ve put aside doctrinal beliefs and have united to speak as one united prophetic voice on these moral issues. *Note, this is NOT political. Encourage your pastors to join the Indiana Pastors Alliance then find them on Facebook. I promise, when they do, they will find a group of united men and women who WILL not be moved. Your pastor won’t participate? Then join grassroots from all over the state who have linked with the other pastors, to support them and fight for religious liberty. Join the Indiana Coalition to Protect Religious Freedom.
- Support Christian Legal Organizations: Now more than ever we need groups like Alliance Defending Freedom, American Center for Law and Justice, and Christian Law Association. You can find more of the Christian legal organizations at Christian Legal Defense. We will need these lawyers to defend our religious liberty as more and more attacks come our way. It’s no longer IF they come… It’s when.
Finally friends…. How is your spirit? This is something my pastor asks me frequently, and I never fully appreciated it until last night as I watched the news and felt myself begin to panic. I felt my heart begin to race and my head begin to throb. I realized I had been so busy working on the front lines that I forgot to remember that nothing happening right now is surprising to God. I had forgotten to set my default button to Jesus. I have heard that sermon probably 100 times. Where is your default button when things get tough? Folks we have read the end of the book. We know who wins in the end. If you’ve read the news lately, you can almost put your Bible right beside the paper and read the translation! Yes there are things we can do to hold back the floodgates, and I DON’T believe apathy is of God… but I do believe God wants us to take care of our spirit. It is not the time for fear. It is the time to put on the full armor of God and walk in his truth. It’s going to get bad if you are a believer in Jesus Christ. But set your default button on Jesus.
