When you watch the news these days, you probably feel the same thing I do… chaos, fear, and panic. What has happened to our safe “Mayberry” world where it was ok to live out your faith in public? Persecution for believers in Jesus Christ in America is no longer an “if” but “when” and what form will it come to your home. I’ll admit, that makes me very nervous. What would I do if faced with losing everything like Aaron and Melissa Klein, owners of Sweetcakes bakery have? I wonder if I would be left standing for Jesus? It feels like everyone is changing their doctrine to ease the politically correct pain. Would I be one to tweak it?
Will anyone stand? Am I weird for standing?
I have the same questions you do. When called intolerant… bigoted, unchristian, where do we stand? What do we say when asked to bake a gay wedding cake when it goes against our convictions? It’s just a cake right? Do we compromise just a bit in order to show “love” to the world? What do we do? Sometimes as the very foundation itself is shakes, we just need to find the anchor. That anchor is the cross.
A couple of weeks ago, I was right there with those same questions! Completely discouraged. Our pastor gave this sermon that was completely terrifying, yet as I walked out of the sanctuary I walked out with the answers that I needed, and complete peace!
Watch it, and I pray you are as encouraged and confident as I was. (download notes)
That’s the answer. We stand. We don’t compromise. When the Little “k” and the Big “K” collide, always follow the BIG “K!”
The key is, you MUST know what the BIG “K” says in the first place! Know it now BEFORE the fire is turned up. Know where you stand before you are faced with persecution, or you will be the first to compromise. The compromise is not necessarily coming from the left. Sometimes it comes from inside the pews, behind the pulpit, or at the water cooler. Sometimes it comes with flowery blogs and feel good sermons. Know what GOD says… nothing else matters. Remember the power of the 4th man in the furnace. You are not alone!
Paraphrasing my pastor, we don’t take our cues from the culture, we take them from the cross, and sometimes that will come with a cost. When culture says to bow to the laws that counter God, you do exactly what Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego did. You say…
“O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. 17 If this be so,our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king.[d] 18 But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.” Daniel 3:17-18
