Wanted: YOU —>Citizen Journalists

Time to break away from network news coverage.

It’s a sad fact these days, if you watch the news for any length of time, you know two things.

  1. At best, you filtered through all of the liberal bends and twists to every story…
  2. At worst, your brain experienced a complete cycle of state-run media brainwashing.

I always knew it was bad, but never so clearly after watching this last media fail with the Planned Parenthood fiasco.

Take a look at this press release written by Planned Parenthood to the media outlets, warning them not to release the undercover video stings. According to The Blaze, this was sent one day before the third video was released. Then look at the graphic to the right from Bill O’Reilly’s talking points. My, we have some very obedient networks don’t we?

Re: Center for Medical Progress Expected to Violate Patient Privacy

The Center for Medical Progress (CMP) is an extreme activist organization whose sole mission is to prevent women from accessing health care and to destroy Planned Parenthood. The board members of this group believe that abortion is “genocide,” and employ people who went to jail for attempting to bomb a women’s health clinic. They are also connected with the man who murdered abortion provider Dr. George Tiller.

CMP has used footage obtained through deceit and unlawful behavior, including possible violations of state recording laws, federal tax laws and falsified state identification. Then, they concoct wildly false stories through selective editing. We expect this video will be no different in that regard; however, footage yet to come is expected to represent an extreme violation of patient privacy by including footage of post-abortion fetal tissue neither patients nor health care professionals authorized be filmed.

When your network decides whether to consider this story newsworthy, or whether to use any of this footage at all, we urge you to keep this in mind: The extremists who entered Planned Parenthood labs under false pretenses violated research protocol, and, worse, violated the privacy of patients involved. Those patients’ privacy should not be further violated by having this footage shared by the media.

The storage and examination processes that CMP used to get this footage are medically necessary. It is necessary medical professionals ensure an abortion is complete so that patients do not get an infection. When tissue is donated formedical research, these steps are also necessary for the donations to be completed. It is also medically necessary that researchers evaluate the laboratory procedures of a medical provider for safety standards and best practices.

Some of the conversations and protocols that occur in medical settings and among professional peers can sound jarring when taken out of context. While this can be difficult to hear or watch, it should not be used as an excuse to defund Planned Parenthood.

CMP gained access to Planned Parenthood facilities under false pretenses and filmed without securing approval from the Planned Parenthood staff being filmed or the patients whose privacy is compromised by this secret videotaping. The material should not be aired.

It makes COMPLETE sense why the Media Research Center stated:

The liberal media raced to defend Planned Parenthood after CMP released its first video. In the first 9 hours and 30 minutes of news shows broadcast after the story broke, ABC, NBC and CBS, spent only 39 seconds on the first video. It took more than 24 hours before all three covered the story. In the week after the first video, the networks gave a mere 9 minutes and 11 seconds to the story (in contrast, the networks devoted more than three times that to the Susan G. Komen controversy, when the charity temporarily decided to defund the abortion giant.)

liberal mediaWe no longer have journalists who want to get to the bottom of a story, we have puppets for a liberal left agenda, working for networks who buy our lawmakers’ seats. With our permission (our silence) the left has taken over the airwaves with almost no objection for us.  We’ve always heard the phrase, “Don’t argue with the guy who buys ink by the barrel.”  We have taken them seriously, not realizing that the times have changed, and now we own the ink! We just choose not to use it.

So what do we do?

Do we dig a hole and hide from the world in hopes that a carrier pigeon will come tap on our window and deliver the truth? Do we leave everything and run to Bermuda? <—now that’s not a bad idea!

Absolutely not! We put on our big boy britches, and we act like our founders did and solve the problem ourselves.  We become Citizen Journalists. That term might freak you out a bit, but just give me a minute to explain.

What is a Citizen Journalist?

A Citizen Journalist is the common “Joe” or “Anne” who is aware of what is happening around them. Its simply gathering, collecting, and spreading news. In other words… it’s YOU!  You are out there every day in the public. You see things. You’re on Social Media. You have a phone. You just have to have the courage to use it!

This was not possible before the Internet. Before the amazing world of the Interweb, we depended on the “professional” network news anchors to get our news. Now it is a different world where we can get the news as it’s happening. Live!

How do we become a Citizen Journalist?

770_3648319This doesn’t necessarily mean we are out in the community constantly looking like Inspector Gadget with our pens and pad of paper, sneaking behind every corner looking for a story!  Although if you are at the right time and place and you see something, whip your phone out and record! I carry my phone with me at all times for that very reason! Nothing creates more buzz or makes the left-wing media madder than TRUTH caught on video. Our homeland security likes to say, “If you see something, say something.” I also like to say, “If you see something, record something!”

Let me give you a great example of this. I was at a local school town hall when former Representative Rebecca Kubacki decided to go on a tirade against her constituents about Common Core. My phone was very handy that morning, as I knew the news was certainly not going to print that rant. Guess who released the video? You guessed it. The video and my blog went VIRAL, and her constituents were not very happy to see how they were treated that morning. They would not have known without seeing it first hand.

While there may be some exciting times like the one I described above, sometimes being a Citizen Journalist is as simple as putting your pointer finger on your mouse and clicking the “share” button! It’s being the carrier that shares the stories like the Planned Parenthood story to people whose only access to news is the state-run liberal news each night.

This happens through mediums like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, word of mouth, and Letters to the Editor. You can do this in less than 30 minute a day! Yes, you heard me right!  If I heard it once, I heard it a thousand times….“Monica, I am so angry I can’t even see straight… Monica I am so angry, I just want to take it to the streets.” Then they pick up their remote control and go check their Facebook and post pictures of kittens and lollipops. Kittens and lollipops don’t tend to offend many. They are safe…. cute… but safe.

Being a Citizen Journalist doesn’t come without cost. You must have courage and wisdom. Sometimes it is scary being the front person of these stories.  You could be the first person to introduce your family and friends to the topic if they only listen to network news. That’s scary.  I’ve had to pass along some yucky topics, but they are usually things the media is not willing to pass along.

How do you use social media to be a Citizen Journalist?

I teach a three-hour workshop on how to effectively use Social Media to get your message out.  I would encourage you to take the class.  My next class will be August 29th. I have about 9 spots left before I fill up. Contact me if you are interested in taking this course or hosting a course in your area.

Let’s take just one of the tools in our toolbox and talk about how to effectively use it as a Citizen Journalist.

citizensSeek out conservative friends, not so you can hang together and sing Kumbaya, but so you can share information and stay encouraged. Get over your fear of offending people. Your country is ON FIRE.  You need to either fight for it or give it away. Grow thick skin. What is the worst they can do to you? Defriend you? Ouch… cry me a river! Your forefathers took a bullet for you. As my twitter friends would say…#getoverit! There are safeguards you can put in place if you have close family members you don’t want to lose. (I teach those in my Social Media class) Otherwise, toughen up and put your armor up. Start slow. Find an issue or news article that you believe in that was posted by your friends. Make sure it is credible and accurate. Hit the share button. Simple.

Go ahead… Try it now… see you in a few.

How did it feel?

Good! You are now in the doorway to becoming a Citizen Journalist. Find conservative news outlets and conservative blogs. Follow them daily. I follow outlets such as The Blaze, Politico, Drudge, The Hill, Fox News, Onenewsnow, LifeNews, Breitbart News, Redstate, Michelle Malkin’s blog, CBN’s The Brody File, Hoosier Access, etc. Bookmark them and follow the news daily. I also follow Facebook pages such as Kitchen Table Activism or Hoosiers against Common Core, where I know the action steps have been researched and are easy to share with my friends. Again make sure your sources are credible. If you are following a blog, make sure you look for the originating news link. Copy and paste articles to your Facebook page. In my social media class I teach you how to do this in under a half hour a day!

The more conservative news you share…the more we beat the drive-by at their own game.

Ready to get a little braver? Sign up for a Twitter account! Twitter is similar to Facebook but without the control of who sees your posts. It is a great source for breaking news. When you follow news Twitter feed, sometimes you get it even faster than television. Start a blog. When I started blogging, I made the decision that I didn’t care if only two people read it. If two lives were changed, it was worth my time. Now it is read by thousands.

Whatever you do… just do something.

The two biggest secrets to beating the liberal media is first, to grow a backbone. You must be angry enough to NOT to care what people say. Grow some courage and then OPEN YOUR MOUTH. There is responsibility that comes with citizen journalism if you are to be taken seriously. I teach these in my social media class, but here are just a few Do’s and Don’ts.

  • Find credible news sources.  There ARE still news outlets speaking truth that are credible. I use them a lot. Research the backgrounds. Look for direct quotes. I listed some above. There are some wacky people out there who love to start conspiracy theories. You don’t want to share those. To gain credibility, you have to know the story is true. Look for original sources that will back your story up. (i.e Direct Quotes, video, original documents)
  • Share multiple times.  Not everyone is online all the time.  Your morning readers are different from your evening readers.  Share the story different times of the day. In my social media class I teach you how to do this in just minutes a day.
  • When possible, post video. Video is a powerful source where eyes and ears can experience it. When possible post or embed video in your blog.  You can’t counter something that was recorded live.
  • Watch the dates. Make sure you post updated or recent articles.  You can use articles from previous years, but make sure you note it. (example: This happened in 2009, but it is relevant to this story because… )
  • Register for my social media class. Book a class in your area. Learn how to use the tools right at your fingertips. Learn how to kick it up a notch!

  • Don’t Gossip. Don’t share hear-say.
  • Don’t embellish the story. Be truthful. Don’t cry wolf.
  • Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water.  Just because you find a story on a personal blog, doesn’t mean you can’t use it. If that blog has research linked and documented, by all means, use it!  Always double-check that the documentation is credible. The left is waiting to pounce and say, “See you don’t know what you are talking about!”
  • Don’t get discouraged.  You will make mistakes. Just remember, so does the network news! Remember Brian Williams?  Some of them intentionally lie to the camera!

What are your issues? What keeps you awake at night? Is it economic freedom? Religious freedom? Sanctity of life? Traditional family values?

Whatever it is…Speak up!

Don’t wait for someone else to do it. The average American is busy living their lives. They may have the best intentions and faithfully watch the news every day, but still not know what is really happening. Are you willing to take the first step? Are you willing to fight for your country?

What is holding you back? What is silencing you? It is time to take back the media. Take back the conservative message. Take back the tactics of the left. Own your message and spread the good news of Conservatism. Don’t let the left media networks define that for you. Wake up your family. Wake up your friends.

How will they know unless they are told?
