What if Ashley Madison sat next to you in church this Sunday?

What sins would be exposed?

Based on my conversations with leaders from several denominations in the U.S. and Canada, I estimate that at least 400 church leaders (pastors, elders, staff, deacons, etc.) will be resigning Sunday. This is a significant moment of embarrassment for the church—and it should be. To be honest, the number of pastors and church leaders on Ashley Madison is much lower than the number of those looking to have an affair. Yet, there is still much that we must consider in the midst of the embarrassment.

When I read this article, I got to thinking about something. Sure it made me mad! We knew it was happening right? The gull of these pastors.  But…. What if “Ashley Madison Hacker in Company” was invited to our church this Sunday unannounced, and was allowed to walk through the pews to expose the sin that we strive to hide each and every week. What would happen if the veil of secrecy was removed from the “Church”  to expose all of us that clean up really nice every Sunday morning.

What would her report find?

Would pride, envy, selfishness, gluttony, pornography, lies, or idols raise their ugly head? We are pretty hard on those folks being exposed right now. That disgusting Josh Duggar… those horrible creeps in the White-house… and oh my word, GOOD HEAVENS look at all of these pastors on this list!!!!!  Don’t get me wrong, we absolutely should be hard on them, but what about us? What sins have we been hiding secretly? What do we do with these sins?

I have to wonder, what would happen if the church decided to clean itself up from the inside out? What would happen if we removed the politically correct names we’ve given sin. What if the 20th century  “sin” dictionary (you know, the one where we re defined what sin is) was hacked and replaced with the Word of God?

Yes, it is sad that many shepherds have fallen.. heart breaking… but something tells me the black spots on the church (our hearts) are far greater than we can even imagine. Please hear me, I am not discounting the horribleness of the Ashley Madison website, and the life destroying sin of adultery…. but I have to ask…

If our church pews were hacked, and sin exposed, could we see the revival we’ve been praying so long for? Is revival worth that to us?

Lord, examine my life and take out every piece that does not please you. Every piece. Take out every hidden sin and create in me a clean heart.
